Samsung is not a company averse to trying out various form factors and sizes for its smartphones and tablets, and the latest unknown Samsung device we've come across might be one of the oddest ones we've seen. A 7-inch tablet with model number SM-T2558 has been spotted in China – certified by the country's regulatory authority TENAA, the SM-T2558 is unique in that it looks more like a phone than any previous Samsung slate, though the screen size and the T in the model number instantly give away the fact that we're not looking at a smartphone or phablet.

In terms of dimensions, the SM-T2558 is taller and thinner than tablets like the Galaxy Tab4 7.0, and also weighs a bit less at 245 grams (the Tab4 is around 276 grams.) Its specs include a 720p display, quad-core 1.2GHz processor (probably a Snapdragon 400), 1.5GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front-facing shooter, TD-LTE and TD-SCDMA connectivity, and 8GB of storage expandable via a microSD slot, all of which put it squarely in the lower mid-range category.

The SM-T2558 runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean instead of KitKat, and the fact that it also sports the old menu key instead of the recent apps key that is found on newer Samsung devices seems to suggest we're not looking at the final version of the device. There's no telling when and where this tablet-cum-phone might launch, and we'll have to wait for more details to leak to paint a better picture of what Samsung is up to.
