Rumor: Samsung’s Android Wear smartwatch to be called Gear Live, specs and release date leaked

We recently heard about Samsung preparing to debut its Android Wear smartwatch at Google I/O, Google's developers conference that kicks in less than 12 hours, and a new leak if offering details on the specs and release date of said smartwatch. According to ALT1040, Samsung's Android Wear smarwatch will be named Gear Live, and will go up for sale on July 7th. Its specs are expected to include a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display, 1.2GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, a 300 mAh battery, a heart rate monitor, and Bluetooth 4.0 for connectivity, and the watch is also said to be IP67 certified for water and dust resistance.

The specs indicate that Samsung will simply be rebranding the Gear 2 and replacing the OS with Android Wear, while possibly removing things like the camera, which aren't supposed to be supported on Google's wearable operating system yet. However, what doesn't make sense here is the name of the watch. All the Gear-branded wearables from Samsung are powered by Tizen, and putting the Android Wear smartwatch under the same brand will only serve to confuse users.

Samsung did trademark the name Galaxy Wear recently, so it's possible the leak isn't entirely accurate, even though the “Live” part of the watch's title would be a good way to describe its Google Now-centered functionality, so do take all this information with the proverbial pinch of salt.

Android Wear on Samsung hardware is a big deal post-2016. Regardless of whether or not you've forgotten that it was a deal in the first place, which I totally did not and it absolutely is. Tizen overtakes Android Wear in smartwatch market share

The Gear Live was Samsung's first and only Android Wear-powered smartwatch. It was released back in 2014 and while many thought that Samsung would launch another one, the company confirmed last year that it will no longer make Android Wear smartwatches. Samsung said that it would only make smartwatches that run on its Tizen platform. […]

Samsung’s abandonment of Android Wear has Android Wear OEMs applauding

I wrote some months ago that Android Wear fans shouldn't get their hopes up about a 2016 Samsung Android Wear smartwatch, and I still stand by the statements I made then. What's new, though, is that it appears as if even Android Wear agrees with Samsung. Back 4 months ago, it seemed as though Samsung was rebelling […]
