Samsung might not be too keen on smartwatches running Google's Android Wear platform, but that doesn't mean its first Android Wear smartwatch, the Gear Live, isn't going to be available for sale worldwide. Today, the Gear Live's availability has expanded to three new regions, namely Australia, Japan, and South Korea, where the watch is up for pre-order from Google Play. That brings availability of the smartwatch to Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Spain, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Keep in mind that the Gear Live will be coming to Samsung and other retail stores in many countries later in July, but for now it remains exclusive to Google Play, from where it will start shipping to consumers on July 11th. The watch is priced at $199, and offers all the features of Android Wear, including Google Now information and voice control, notifications, controlling music on a connected smartphone, measuring heart rate and other fitness parameters, and more. It also features a heart rate scanner, and is IP67 for water and dust resistance.

Android Wear on Samsung hardware is a big deal post-2016. Regardless of whether or not you've forgotten that it was a deal in the first place, which I totally did not and it absolutely is. Tizen overtakes Android Wear in smartwatch market share

The Gear Live was Samsung's first and only Android Wear-powered smartwatch. It was released back in 2014 and while many thought that Samsung would launch another one, the company confirmed last year that it will no longer make Android Wear smartwatches. Samsung said that it would only make smartwatches that run on its Tizen platform. […]

How Samsung singlehandedly brought down Android Wear

It wasn't all that long ago that Samsung and Google were arguing over Samsung's Tizen efforts, and, since that argument some 2 years ago, Samsung has continued to build Tizen and its own platform ecosystem. Well, LG, Huawei, and Motorola have sat out the last several months of 2016 in the smartwatch market, but news this past week from […]

Samsung’s abandonment of Android Wear has Android Wear OEMs applauding

I wrote some months ago that Android Wear fans shouldn't get their hopes up about a 2016 Samsung Android Wear smartwatch, and I still stand by the statements I made then. What's new, though, is that it appears as if even Android Wear agrees with Samsung. Back 4 months ago, it seemed as though Samsung was rebelling […]
