Last year, Samsung used two different camera sensors in the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge, and the company has repeated the same strategy this year with the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. Yes, some Galaxy S7 and S7 edge units are using Samsung’s ISOCELL camera sensor, while others are using Sony’s IMX260 sensor.

Earlier today, Samsung made an official announcement of its new 1/2.5-inch 12.3-megapixel ISOCELL camera sensor (S5K2L1). An XDA user has posted an image of his Galaxy S7 edge (SM-G935F), which shows the device using Samsung’s sensor instead of Sony's IMX260. This confirms that the company is using two different sensors in its latest flagship smartphones.

There’s negligible difference between these sensors regarding on-paper specifications. Both are 1/2.5-inch sensors with a resolution of 12.3 megapixels, dual-pixel phase-detection autofocus, and an individual pixel size of 1.4µm. Right now, we don’t know if there’s any difference between the final image quality from these sensors, but we'll let you know once we get our hands on different units.
