Samsung has been rumored to be working on a virtual reality headset, and it seems like that headset could launch as the Gear VR. Samsung has filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for trademarking Gear VR, and the name pretty much confirms what kind of a wearable we're looking at here. Samsung is said to be collaborating with Oculus VR, makers of the Oculus Rift, to create a virtual reality headset with an OLED display for its Galaxy phones and tablets, and while the trademark application doesn't give us any details on its expected launch date, it's possible Samsung will unveil the Gear VR alongside the Galaxy Note 4.
However, given the complexity involved in developing a virtual reality headset compared to wearables like smartwatches and even smart glasses, the official launch of Samsung's VR headset might not happen until next year. The initial rumor about the headset indicated that while testing has already started with current-gen devices like the Galaxy Note 3, the headset would require next-gen hardware to function properly, which means a launch alongside the Galaxy Note 4 would make the list of compatible devices extremely short. Guess we will have to wait and see.
