Could the Galaxy S6 break the norm and come with 4GB of RAM instead of the 3GB of RAM that is currently standard on most flagships? Whether that will happen remains to be seen, but Samsung is now making sure that it is actually an option as the company has started mass producing the industry's first 4GB LPDDR4 mobile DRAM modules for phones and tablets. Built on Samsung's 20nm process, these RAM modules will offer an input/output data rate of up to 3200Mbps and up to 40 percent lower power consumption than LPDDR3 modules.
Other features will include support for UHD video recording and playback, and continuous shooting of high-resolution images over 20-megapixel. “By initiating production of the 20nm 8Gb LPDDR4, which is even faster than the DRAM for PCs and servers and consumes much less energy, we are contributing to the timely launch of UHD, large-screen flagship mobile devices,” said Joo Sun Choi, Executive Vice President of Memory Sales and Marketing at Samsung Electronics. These 4GB chips are expected to be ready for market deployment by early 2015, and we'll likely see Samsung use it in the Galaxy Note 5 that is sure to come out later this year.
