Qantas Airways today announced a partnership with Samsung on a new trial entertainment service that uses the company's Gear VR headset. The airline is going to deploy this virtual reality headset which will only be available to First Class passengers. Qantas will use these headsets to showcase network destinations, its new products, videos of its A380s landing and taking off as well as 360-degree views of its First Class lounge at LAX. With this trial it will become the first airline to offer a virtual reality entertainment experience inflight.
A number of Gear VR headsets will be available to its First Class customers in Sydney and Melbourne International First Lounges. On select A380 long haul flights the headsets will also be available to passengers in First Class cabins.
Qantas is running this trial for three months to gauge customer feedback and will then make a decision whether it will further integrate the technology into its inflight entertainment suite.
So if you have been ambivalent about purchasing this $200 VR headset, which requires a Galaxy Note 4 to work, why not splurge on a Qantas First Class ticket and give it a try before you buy?
An impulse buy would probably be cheaper than that ticket.
