According to a latest report from Gartner, one of the industry's top research and analytics firm, Apple dethroned Samsung in the smartphone market by selling 74.8 million iPhones during Q4 2014. However, the sales gap wasn't very wide, as Samsung sold around 73 million smartphones, narrowly missing Apple's numbers. Samsung managed to sell around 83.3 million smartphones during the same time a year ago, while Apple could only sell 50.2 million iPhones.
Apple's lead might not stay for long as Samsung has launched two new high-end smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge, which are being praised by many for their striking design, high-end hardware, and slimmed-down software. Apple waited two years before releasing a large screen iPhone, so many consumers who were waiting for a larger screen upgraded immediately. This might result in Apple not reaching such record sales next year, and give Samsung a chance to win back its podium position in the market, but only time will tell what's coming.
