Once in a while we come across an advertisement that does much more than just put a company's product in front of us so that we may spend our money on it. These ads are often considered as the epitome of creative thought and they manage to leave a lasting impression on us. Samsung's Turkish branch has come up with something like this. It made an ad that's meant to promote Samsung's video conferencing service for the hearing-impaired. While it does that, it also tugs at your heartstrings. Keep some tissues close when you watch it.
The ad tells the story of Muharrem, a hearing-impaired man, who finds out that members of his community have learnt sign language just so they can communicate with him in a way that's more natural to him. Muharrem is surprised when he helps a man pick up fruit that he has dropped and the man conveys his thanks in sign language. He's even more surprised when he steps into a cab and finds that the driver greets him in sign language.
This ad has already racked up more than four million views on YouTube. It was filmed in Bagcilar which is a working class community of Istanbul towards the end of 2014. The team has to choreograph it meticulously so that Muharrem could meet people who had learnt sign language. Preparations took an entire month but it most definitely was worth it.
