If a new report from South Korea is to be believed, Samsung is in talks with fellow Korean giant, LG, to supply LCD panels for its upcoming televisions. While the two companies are rivals in the industry, a deal like this could turn out to be mutually beneficial.
Head of Samsung's TV division, Kim Hyun-suk partially confirmed this at the CES 2017 event in Las Vegas, although he didn't reveal much. He said “There are no specifics decided yet but the two companies are deliberating on the matter carefully and seriously.”
A previous report had talked about Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd and Sharp Corp stalling all shipments of LCD panels to Samsung, which has left the company in a tough spot. But it seems like both LG and Samsung are close to finalizing a deal. It is rumored that Samsung will outsource batteries for the Galaxy Note 8 from LG later this year (although a report from earlier today suggests Samsung SDI will continue to be the main supplier), so the partnership between the two companies could extend beyond LCD panels.
