Citing unnamed sources, the Korea Economic Daily has reported that Samsung is going to invest $300 million in building its first appliance factory in the United States which will be based in the state of South Carolina.
Samsung already has a factory in Mexico where it manufactures appliances and then ships them to the United States. It was reported earlier this year that Samsung might establish its own factory in the United States now that President Trump has taken office.
He has promised to tweak the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) so that the US can charge hefty tax on products manufactured in Mexico for sale in the United States.
“It is true we are considering the establishment of an appliance factory in the US. It is natural that an enterprise responds accordingly when a client nation’s policy changes,” a Samsung Electronics official said in January this year.
It was then reported that Samsung will decide on a location to build the plant by the first half of this year, it was reportedly looking at both Alabama and South Carolinaa.
While no official announcement has been made just yet, the South Korean newspaper claims that the plant will be based in Blythewood, South Carolina. A formal agreement will reportedly be signed this month and construction will be completed by 2019.
Samsung has not yet commented on this report.
