Samsung will be entering its 25th year in India very soon, and to mark the occasion, the company has published an infographic chronicling its journey in the country so far. The infographic records all the major milestones in Samsung’s impressive growth in the country. (Unfortunately, the image is blurry and requires you to zoom to read. We will update it if we come across a better version online.)
Samsung’s journey in India started way back in 1995 when it established Samsung India Electronics Ltd. (SEL). Soon, it set up a manufacturing facility in Noida, a city in Northern India, and started making TVs in 1997 and mobile phones a decade later. Last year, the company inaugurated the world’s largest mobile factory there.
Today, Samsung is a $10 billion corporation and a household name in the country. It currently has 70,000 employees, two manufacturing plants, five R&D Centres, and a Design Centre in India. It also boasts 3,000 service points and 180,000 stores, which the company claims is the largest retail footprint for any brand In the region. Samsung is a market leader across many product categories in the country.
In many ways, India has become an important piece of the puzzle in Samsung’s growth story. Initiatives like ‘Make in India,’ ‘Make for India,’ and ‘Make for the World’ are a testament to this. Part of this is probably an outcome of the company’s declining fortunes in China, which forced the Korean tech giant to gradually move its manufacturing to India and Vietnam.
