Samsung took the veil off a new gaming monitor lineup boasting the Odyssey brand ahead of CES 2020. The series comprises two models called the G7 and G9, both of which deliver an impressive bundle of features, including VA panel technology with a response time of only 1ms.
Both monitors have a 1000R curved QLED panel with a refresh rate of 240Hz, and they're compatible with NVIDIA G-Sync and AMD FreeSync 2. The Odyssey G7 and G9 flaunt a TÜV Rheinland certificate for Eye Comfort.
Odyssey G9 overview
The Odyssey G9 is a massive 49-inch ultra-wide display with a 32:9 aspect ratio, a resolution of 5,120 by 1,440, and HDR1000 support, ensuring a high level of brightness and contrast. It's the world's first monitor to combine all of these features into a single package.
The Odyssey G9's exterior design is striking. It has a glossy white finish and features what Samsung calls ‘futuristic Infinity Core Lighting glowing rear core.' In essence, it's an array of LEDs offering 5 effects and 52 color options.
Odyssey G7 overview
The Odyssey G7 – unlike the G9 – will be available in two sizes with a 27-inch or 32-inch diagonal. It's still a VA panel with the same impressive 1ms response time, 240Hz refresh rate, and 1000R curvature but has a more conventional 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2,560 by 1,440.
Likewise, it's G-Sync and FreeSync 2 compatible, but unlike the G9, it tops out at HDR600 brightness, which is still a decent figure for a gaming monitor.
The Odyssey G7 has a different exterior design with a black finish and a ‘Core Lighting' module at the back. It can dim during gameplay or change color based on the user's preferences. It looks different from the Infinity Core Lighting system so it likely offers fewer color options and effects.
Odyssey G7 and G9 will hit the market in Q2
The new Odyssey gaming monitor lineup will launch globally starting Q2 2020. Prices have not yet been disclosed but given the specifications above, they will likely be sold at a premium price.
The Odyssey G7 and G9 will be on display at CES 2020 from January 7-10 at Booth #15006.
