You may have wondered why Samsung has created the Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition) and what was the company's thought process when deciding to build this device. Samsung gave us an answer today, along with more details on the phone's development process, in a video titled What Led Samsung to Release Galaxy S20 FE. Spoiler alert: It has nothing to do with some of its rivals who have been focusing on the concept of flagship killers for years, or at least Samsung hasn't acknowledged this, even though the Galaxy S20 FE is surely a threat to OnePlus.

According to Yoonie Park of Global Brand Marketing at Samsung Electronics, the Galaxy S20 FE was created to give customers a new Galaxy S20 flagship model for the current economic climate. The company wanted to create a cheaper flagship for customers who may be less inclined to spend $1,000 on a smartphone in the COVID era, and this is how the Galaxy S20 FE came to be.

The Galaxy S20 FE was built around customer feedback

The Galaxy S20 FE is not the best smartphone around but it tries to strike a good specs-price balance. Samsung had to make some compromises to achieve the lower price, such as skimping on accessories, but at the same time the company had to decide what features must be included in the Galaxy S20 FE in order for it to be successful.

To this end, the company conducted a consumer survey in Australia, Germany, South Korea, UK, and the US, asking customers what excites them to buy the Galaxy S20. The answers were: Camera, performance, and display.

As a reminder, the Galaxy S20 FE has a triple camera setup including a 12MP wide, a 12MP ultra-wide sensors, and an 8MP telephoto sensor, as well as a 32MP selfie camera. It's powered by the Exynos 990 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset, and it boasts a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 and a 120Hz refresh rate. The high refresh rate is something that even the standard Galaxy Note 20 doesn't have.

The company also conducted a different survey to determine what color options were the most popular. The winner was Cloud Navy with 43%, followed by Cloud Lavender (41%) and Cloud Mint (39%). Check the video below if you want to see the full story behind the Galaxy S20 FE.
