The Galaxy S20 Fan Edition is getting its first software update which appears to contain the October 2020 security patch. Identified by build number G781BXXU1ATJ1, the over-the-air release first appeared in Germany last week, with the deployment still ongoing. Based on Samsung's firmware release naming practices, it would appear this update also contains other, user-facing changes, additions, or both. We still don't have an official changelog on hand, however, so it remains to be seen whether those are anything more consequential than overall stability improvements.
As always, if you own a compatible model and aren't keen on waiting for the update to reach you naturally, you can download full system images from our firmware archives and flash them directly onto your device. Just make sure you know what you're doing beforehand and at the very least create a backup of your data.
The first of many
The Galaxy S20 FE is part of Samsung's recent promise of three generations' worth of major Android OS updates. And buying it should also mean you're pretty set in regards to security patches even beyond that.
The device itself slots in between the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ in terms of features and pricing. Which may not be a huge niche, but Samsung obviously believes it's worth giving a shot. Or, better said, industry watchers suspect the rest of the lineup sold poorly enough to justify such an experiment.
For what it's worth, we found it to be quite an excellent performer, even though an alarmingly large number of others are experiencing rather bizarre touchscreen issues with their units. So, it's at least one to keep an eye out once it releases in your country, assuming it hasn't already.
