Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A52, Galaxy A52 5G, and Galaxy A72 today at its first-ever Unpacked event for mid-range phones, and boy are these phones good. The number of upgrades these phones bring over their predecessors is nothing short of amazing, and it's also great to see that Samsung has brought features typically reserved for its flagships to the Galaxy A52/A52 5G and Galaxy A72.
90Hz/120Hz displays, Snapdragon processors for every market
Let's start with the screens: The Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72 feature 6.5-inch and 6.7-inch Infinity-O Super AMOLED panels with a 90Hz refresh rate, while the A52 5G gets a 120Hz display. These aren't the first mid-range phones with high refresh rate displays from Samsung, but they may be the first ones with the power to handle the higher refresh rate, thanks to the fact that the A52 and A72 are both powered by the Snapdragon 720G processor while the A52 5G gets the Snapdragon 750G.
The cameras have also received a major boost in specs. All three phones come with an optically stabilized 64MP main rear camera and share the same 12MP ultra-wide and 5MP depth sensors as well. However, the Galaxy A72 replaces the 5MP macro camera of the A52/A52 5G with an 8MP 3x telephoto lens. It's the same camera that you find on the Galaxy S20 FE, so it should offer excellent zoom pictures till 10x magnification.
At the front, there's a 32MP camera for selfies on all models. And Samsung has also introduced a couple of new camera features on the software side. The A52, A52 5G, and A72 come with a new Fun mode that integrates a variety of Snapchat AR effects into Samsung's camera app, and they also get Pro video mode, which is a first for any non-flagship Galaxy phone.
Water resistance makes a comeback to the A series
The hardware upgrades don't end there: The Galaxy A52, A52 5G and A72 come with stereo speakers for higher-quality sound. They are also water and dust resistant thanks to an IP67 rating. The A52 and A52 5G are powered by a 4,500 mAh battery, while the Galaxy A72 gets a 5,000 mAh battery. 25W charging is supported on all three, though Samsung is going to ship a 15W charger in the box in order to save costs.
As part of Samsung's new software update policy, the Galaxy A52, A52 5G and A72 will get three major OS upgrades and four years of security updates after launch. As you would expect, that means Android 14 will come to these devices at some point, as they run Android 11 with One UI 3.1 out of the box. For those wondering, Samsung Pay is supported over both NFC and MST, but the latter may only be available in some markets.
