Green screens will hate Samsung’s latest business idea

Diversification has always been the name of the game for Samsung. And the company now seems to be eyeing the prospects of branching into film. Namely, it just signed a partnership with Korean publisher and entertainment giant CJ ENM, agreeing to support the construction of a high-tech virtual video studio.

This isn't just a distant idea, mind you, as the studio is already planned to open by the end of the year. It will be situated in the city of Paju, located in the immediate vicinity of Seoul. Furthermore, the collaboration Samsung and CJ ENM reportedly negotiated is multifaceted. For one, the tech giant will be equipping the studio with some of its latest display advancements, including The Wall.

Is this the beginning of the end for green screens?

The new microLED variant of The Wall with better colors and all the other bells and whistles, to be exact. Secondly, Samsung also plans to jointly produce some content with CJ ENM moving forward. Content has been an area of great interest for the company in recent years. Which is hardly surprising, considering its world-class marketing setup and the close proximity of those sectors.

If you're having trouble visualizing what a “virtual” video studio actually means, think back to the recent Galaxy Unpacked events. Instead of green screens, those were largely all shot with real displays. And the lack of any moiré effect (wavy screen patterns) from the end result is due to years of painstaking R&D and preparation. As it all comes down to making sure all of your equipment is refreshing at the same frequency.
