Executive Chairman of Samsung Electronics, Lee Jae-Yong, has returned to South Korea from a 10-day long business trip to Southeast Asia, reports The Korea Times. The aim of his visit to the three countries was to reportedly “pinpoint the next sustainable growth drivers of the firm in the decades to come.

Samsung Chairman inaugurates $200 million R&D center in Vietnam

While the goal of the trip as a whole might have been to search for new business opportunities, one of the main reasons for Lee's visit to Vietnam, in particular, was to attend a ceremony there to celebrate the completion of the company’s $200 million R&D center which is located in Hanoi.

The ceremony took place on December 23. At the ceremony, Lee said, “the research center in Vietnam will fortify not only the competitiveness of the country's industries but also bilateral cooperation between Korea and Vietnam”. After the ceremony, Lee visited the company’s mobile phone and display manufacturing facility in Hanoi to boost the morale of local employees. During the trip to this facility, he also reviewed the company’s mid to long-term growth strategies.

He then visited Samsung SDI in Malaysia. However, the specifics of his visit to Singapore are currently unknown. Upon arriving at Gimpo International Airport on Friday, Lee was surrounded by reporters asking him about his business outlook for 2023. Without going into too many details, Lee said, “I will try my best. I appreciate your hard work.” Samsung has also put up a video on its YouTube channel for Korea highlighting the visit of Samsung's Chairman to Vietnam.
