Samsung's latest flagships, the Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra, became available for sale merely a week ago, and, well, as early as it may be, we are already looking forward to the next Galaxy flagship phones that will launch later this year.

We speak, naturally, about Samsung's foldable phones, which took over the flagship launch window that was previously occupied by Samsung's Galaxy Note lineup. Rumors about the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 have already been making the rounds for a few months, and today we have exclusive information on the two phones' storage options.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 storage options are not surprising

As you would expect, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be the better (and, of course, costlier) device when it comes to storage options. At the moment, Samsung is developing 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB variants of the Z Fold 5. These are the same storage options as the ones you have for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the new Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The storage options for the Z Flip 5 will not change, either: we are told it will come with 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage. Like the base Galaxy S23 model, the Z Flip 5's 128GB storage variant will likely use a UFS 3.1 chip while the other variants use the new UFS 4.0 specification, as Samsung does not currently manufacture UFS 4.0 chips with storage capacity less than 256GB.

That means folks buying the 128GB variant of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will not be seeing an upgrade in read and write speeds over the Galaxy Z Flip 4 or the Galaxy Z Flip 3. But that shouldn't affect real-world performance in any way, at least if our experience with the Galaxy S23 is any indication. UFS 4.0 chips have impressive specs, but UFS 3.1 storage is no slouch and continues to be quite fast for use in flagship smartphones.

Of course, it would be nice if Samsung would just permanently drop the 128GB storage option from its flagship smartphones, but it doesn't look like the company will be doing that in 2023. Hopefully Samsung will offer a free storage upgrade to those who pre-order the base Galaxy Z Flip 5 variant, just like it did to those buying the Galaxy S23 series phones, and do it globally instead of making it a pre-order bonus limited to select markets.
