Samsung may be leading the Android smartphone market worldwide, but Apple is crushing everyone in terms of phone popularity. 8 out of the top 10 best-selling smartphones in the world are iPhones. And although the remaining two are made by Samsung, they're not exactly the most technically-impressive Galaxy models.
A recent paper by market analyst Counterpoint Research revealed the world's top 10 best-selling phones of 2022. The iPhone 13 was at the top of the list, followed by the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Samsung's first entry on the list was in 4th place, thanks to the Galaxy A13.
The Korean tech giant's low-cost phone was then followed by five other iPhone models, and the 10th most popular (and the second Samsung phone in the ranking) was the Galaxy A03.
No other Android smartphone maker made it to the top-10 list. Samsung was the only one, but neither of its two Galaxy phone entries to the list was ever designed to compete with iPhones on a hardware level.
Samsung took only two spots on the list, but that's twice as many compared to 2021 when it had only one phone in the top 10. And Xiaomi was pushed out of the top 10 in 2022. Whereas in 2021, Xiaomi had two models on the list. Samsung won in front of its Android rivals, but that didn't mean much for Apple.
In 2022, the Galaxy A03 is the most affordable device on the list. It performed well in CALA (Caribbean and Latin America) and MEA (Middle East and Africa) regions. The Galaxy A13 recorded the best sales in CALA and MEA markets, as well as in India.
In terms of global market share, Samsung and Apple are on relatively equal footing, but they achieve this in different ways. Apple doesn't manufacture low-end phones and has fewer models on sale, whereas Samsung achieves a similar market share as Apple through a more diverse device portfolio.
The research firm says that the iPhone 13 was the best-selling phone in China, the US, the UK, Germany, and France. The iPhone 12, which was the oldest phone on the list, maintained decent sales numbers in the USA, Japan, and China.
