Samsung has always been the best in the business when it comes to foldable phones. Some of the marquee features of the Galaxy Z lineup include an IPX8 rating for water resistance and a strong hinge that can hold the phone at any angle. Now, the South Korean firm is planning to go one step further in terms of durability.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 would reportedly be the first Samsung phones with a waterdrop-shaped hinge, according to tipster @chunvn8888. The new hinge design reduces the visibility of the foldable screen's crease, something that buyers have been complaining about. It also allows the phone's two halves to shut completely flat, which makes the phone slimmer and stops the dust from entering the phone. Unlike some other brands, Samsung's new hinge can hold the phone at any angle despite using a waterdrop-shaped hinge.
New waterdrop hinge could make Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 dust-resistant
According to the tipster, Samsung is trying to bring an IP67 rating to its next-generation foldable phones, and they could be the first foldable phones in the world with dust resistance. However, the tipster says that Samsung may or may not finalize this feature. But that gives us hopes of seeing a dust-resistance rating in future Galaxy Z phones. The tipster also claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be around 10g lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 4. So, it could weigh around the 253g mark.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 are expected to go official in August or September of 2023. Both phones are expected to largely use similar-sized Super AMOLED foldable screens with a 120Hz refresh rate. They both are expected to come equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 For Galaxy processor. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 will continue to use the same cameras as its predecessors, but the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will come with an upgraded 12MP primary camera.
