Galaxy Z Flip 5 selfie camera won’t get an upgrade, but that’s okay!

In a few months, Samsung will launch two new foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5, in addition to new tablets, a smartwatch, and possibly new earbuds. Details on the upcoming devices have been making their way online for some time now, and today, a new report is revealing information about the Galaxy Z Flip 5.

According to our friends over at GalaxyClubSamsung will stick with a 10-megapixel selfie camera for the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The Galaxy Z Flip line has been using a 10MP selfie camera since the first device came out, and it looks like that won't change this year, either.

However, it's unclear whether only the camera's megapixel count will remain the same. The Galaxy Z Flip line's 10MP selfie camera is not as good as the 10MP selfie camera Samsung has used on Galaxy S, Note, and Galaxy Z Fold devices as far as specs such as aperture and autofocus technology are concerned, and it remains to be seen if those specs will see any changes on the Z Flip 5.

Z Flip 5's larger cover display should make up for the lack of a selfie camera upgrade

But whether or not the Z Flip 5's selfie camera will be upgraded in some way, we don't think it really matters. With the Galaxy Z Flip 5's larger cover display, capturing higher-quality selfies with the rear camera will be more convenient than it has been on existing Galaxy Z Flip smartphones.

In fact, one could argue the larger cover display will make a dedicated selfie camera somewhat redundant. Perhaps Samsung should just ditch it for a proper full-screen inner display on its flip-style foldables? After all, the larger cover display, along with the Flex Mode capabilities of Samsung's foldables, would mean you could technically use the rear camera for video calls as well.

Anyway, leaving whataboutery aside, the Galaxy Z Flip 5's use of the same selfie camera as its predecessors shouldn't be a cause for concern or factor in to anyone's decision on buying the phone. An upgrade would be nice to see, especially to the new and improved 12MP front cam on the Galaxy S23 series, but it's not something we would consider to be too important where the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 is concerned.
