Samsung has had a leg up on Apple with its Always-On Display (AOD) for many years. Apple only recently adopted this feature that Samsung fans have taken for granted. But as usual, Apple did things a little differently and implemented AOD in its own way to stand apart and not blatantly copy what its biggest rival has been doing for years. And now, one rumor suggests that Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 5 will borrow some AOD ideas from Apple.
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are the first Apple phones to use AOD. But unlike Samsung's Galaxy phones, the iPhones can use full-screen photos as AOD, complete with a transition animation. Now, a new rumor (via @Tech_Reve) claims that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will have the same kind of Always-On Display as the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
Samsung could build upon an existing AOD feature
Interestingly, Samsung already allows users to add photos and custom images to the Always-On Display through the “Image Clock” option. However, this so-called Image Clock is limited to a small window rather than showcasing custom images, GIFs, and photos full-screen. Even so, if Samsung wants to offer users the option to set full-screen photos and GIFs as their AODs, the company is already halfway there.
The source isn't clear on the details and is unsure if this full-screen AOD feature will also be available for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 or other phones through the One UI 6 update. But assuming that Samsung will bring this full-screen AOD feature to the Galaxy Z Flip 5, it'll probably do so only for the cover display. Previous rumors say Samsung resized the Z Flip 5's cover display to fit almost the entire area of the half-shell.
Samsung should unveil the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 later in August or September. Although, some rumors citing the company's manufacturing schedule for hinges say that the foldable phones may even be released early in July.
