After many rumors and leaks, the shape of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover screen no longer seems to be in doubt. The cover screen is almost as big as half the phone and has an unusual folder-like notch. This much appears to be definite, or at least as definite as an unofficial bit of information can be.
There's also a relatively high level of certainty concerning how the cover screen might blend in with an always-black panel that goes edge-to-edge. However, another intriguing rumor (via @chunvn8888) may have thrown a spanner in the works as it explores a different possibility.
Could the Galaxy Z Flip 5 borrow design ideas from the original Flip (2020)?
Most leaks and rumors indicate that the Galaxy Z Flip 5's cover screen will be fitted on a black backdrop similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 3/4 cover screen, except now, that black panel will cover the entire half of the Z Flip 5 (as seen in the 3D render below). So, regardless of what color the rest of the phone is, the area around the cover screen will always be black, which will help hide the display when it's turned off.
On the other hand, a different rumor suggests that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover screen might actually borrow ideas from the original Z Flip rather than the Z Flip 3 and Flip 4.
According to this rumor, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 won't have a black cover screen frame unless the rest of the phone is black. But for other color options, the cover screen frame and the display itself will have a different finish that will match (or almost match) the phone's color when the cover screen is turned off.
Or, in other words, in terms of finish, the Z Flip 5's exterior display would be more similar to the small 1.1-inch cover screen of the original Galaxy Z Flip.
Exactly how the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will look like is not yet entirely clear. But this is an interesting take on the phone's design. Samsung has done this sort of display color-matching before, so it's easy to imagine that the company might borrow this idea again.
Samsung might announce the Galaxy Z Flip 5 in late July rather than August, so we might find out more about the phone sooner rather than later.
