Samsung adds new device to security update schedule, downgrades two others

Samsung releases regular security updates, in addition to new Android and One UI updates, for a huge number of devices. Flagships and popular mid-range devices usually start with monthly security updates before being downgraded to a quarterly schedule. Not-so-popular Galaxy devices, meanwhile, often start out on a quarterly schedule and are then limited to two security updates every year until they reach the end of their support period.

The new Galaxy A24 will get security updates every three months

This month, Samsung ended support for the Galaxy S10 lineup (except the S10 Lite), but it has also added a new device to the list. That device is the Galaxy A24, which launched recently as the cheapest Samsung phone that's promised four years of Android OS upgrades.

It will receive security updates every three months from the get go instead of every month, which is unsurprising. As for how long it will get security updates, the answer is five years, similar to Samsung's flagships and some mid-range phones.

The devices downgraded from a quarterly to biannual release schedule are the Galaxy M42 5G and the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite. This downgrade follows six months after the two devices received the Android 13 update and around three months after they were treated to One UI 5.1.

In addition to getting security updates at a lower frequency, neither device will get any Android and One UI updates going forward, so it might be the right time to consider an upgrade to a newer phone or tablet if software updates are important to you. Or you could continue to use them for another few months, as major OS upgrades aren't really that exciting anymore and we don't expect that to change with Android 14 and One UI 6.0.
