Samsung is building a generative AI, and you won’t be able to use it

A new report citing anonymous sources says Samsung's Kye Hyun Kyung confirmed on Friday that the company is indeed developing a service based on advanced artificial intelligence, similar to ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Bing Chat. However, you won't be able to use this service unless you are a Samsung employee, and even then, it won't be available to everyone working at the company.

Samsung really wants to give its employees the power of generative AI. It did so through ChatGPT earlier this year, but after a few employees unintentionally leaked sensitive semiconductor and company data by entering it into the AI service and forever becoming a part of it's cloud-based “brain,” Samsung decided to prevent employees from accessing ChatGPT for work-related projects.

Nevertheless, a recent rumor indicated that Samsung has a solution – the sort of solution only Samsung could devise. Namely, the tech giant will build its own generative AI for its employees. Why use ChatGPT when you can build your own secure AI?

According to The Investor, citing anonymous sources, Samsung's Kye Hyun Kyung confirmed during a lecture at Yonsei University in Seoul on Friday that this generative AI tool is indeed in development.

The report cites Kye Hyun Kyung saying: “Depending on how we use generative AI, there can be tremendous innovation in what we do.” The CEO added that the company is “promoting the introduction of customized AI through a local specialized firm.” Older rumors hint at Naver Corp. and Samsung jointly developing the AI.

An AI strictly for Samsung corporate users

Unlike ChatGPT and other generative AIs that are widely available, Samsung is developing this new tool strictly for in-house use. That way, employees can leverage the power of AI for projects and input sensitive company data into the AI's database without the fear of leaking it to the world.

The AI will run in a closed circuit on the company's servers and be available to Samsung semiconductor and software developers. The idea is to give employees a new powerful AI tool to create better products faster rather than launching a ChatGPT competitor that Galaxy device customers could use.

The CEO said a large language model is the only way to support employees in tasks such as translation and knowledge search. Samsung aims to make a more basic version of its generative AI available to employees in December and to release a more integrated generative AI company-wide in February 2024.
