The Sony PlayStation 5 has 825GB of built-in storage, of which only roughly 667GB are available for games. And although that might sound like it should be enough, games nowadays can take up more than 100GB a piece, and you can run out of 667GB quicker than you might think. Thankfully, Sony lets PlayStation 5 users upgrade the storage on their consoles, and Samsung offers some of the best solutions on the market.

There are two ways to upgrade the storage on your PlayStation 5: by using an M.2 SSD or hooking up an external USB-based drive. Whether you should use one or both methods to upgrade your PS5 storage is up to you and what you need from your gaming console. Here's all you need to know.

What are the best Samsung drives to upgrade the PlayStation 5's storage?

The PS5 cannot run games directly off of a disc. Games have to be installed (either digitally or via disc) on the console's storage or an SSD before they can be played. So, before you buy a storage upgrade for your PlayStation 5, you need to ask yourself why?

The PS5 can only run PS5 games from its built-in storage or the internal M.2 SSD expansion. However, it can easily run PS4 games from USB-C storage.

As such, if you're looking for more storage for PlayStation 5 games, your only option is a high-performance M.2 SSD with a heatsink. But if you want to create a collection of PlayStation 4 games that you can play any time on your PS5, you can easily use an external USB-C storage solution.

Samsung offers some of the best PS5-compatible drives, and right now, they're available at a discount. You can buy the 1TB or 2TB 980 PRO M.2 SSD with heatsink for $69 or $139, respectively (down from $129 and $199).

If you'd rather get an external drive to install PS4 games for your Play Station 5, you can now buy the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield USB 3.2 drive for as low as $74 (1TB). The 2TB and 4TB variants are available at Samsung's online store for $139 and $259, respectively.

The SSD T7 Shield has P65 water and dust resistance and boasts a rugged build, which means your PS4 games can be stored safely without having to worry about damaging the drive and losing your video game collection.
