Samsung Display is the world's biggest OLED display maker, and its OLED panels are used in various products, ranging from smartwatches and smartphones to TVs and cars. The company has now announced that it has developed a 9.45-inch circular OLED screen for the all-new MINI lineup of electric vehicles.
A few days ago, MINI, a British car brand, teased its brand-new lineup of electric cars, and the entire family of new products uses a futuristic circular OLED screen as the infotainment system. It covers all the major features, including multimedia playback, navigation, climate control, fuel display, and voice commands. It runs an Android (AOSP) operating system called MINI Operating System 9. It features 5G wireless connectivity, GPS, MINI Experience Modes, 30 new sound signals, MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant, MINI Navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, MINI Digital Key Plus, and the ability to upgrade system software over the air.
Samsung Display and MINI showcased the new infotainment display at the Gamescom 2023 event in Cologne, Germany. The 9.45-inch OLED screen was displayed at the cylindrical display tower called the MINI Incubator. It features ten such circular OLED screens, and the whole booth design is inspired by one of the most iconic settings in science fiction culture: the high-tech lab. The new OLED panel uses an eco-friendly structure that minimizes the use of plastic. As usual, it comes with all the advantages of OLED panels, including true blacks, infinite contrast ratio, flexibility in designs and shapes, and lower blue light emissions.
Brad Jung, VP and Head of Samsung Display's Mobile Display Marketing Team, said, “We are excited to join MINI's journey as a market trendsetter with the automotive industry's first round OLED. We look forward to providing our customers with even more stunning display experiences with Samsung Display's unrivaled OLED technology in the mobility sector.”
