Massive problem raises questions on Exynos 2400’s gaming performance

Samsung is, unfortunately, going back to its old ways. After surprisingly staying exclusive with Snapdragon chips for the Galaxy S23, the company is expected to launch Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 versions of the Galaxy S24. And it looks like there might be a massive problem with the Exynos 2400 variant of its upcoming phones.

Exynos 2400 GPU may not be as good as Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Although it appears that the Exynos 2400 might have a more potent CPU structure (10-core) than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the AMD RDNA-based GPU inside the Exynos chip might not be as good as the one on the Snapdragon. It is rumored that the performance of the Xclipse 940 GPU inside the Exynos 2400 is disappointing even after Samsung worked hard on its optimization. Apparently, the performance deficit is not because of the fabrication quality. Instead, it is reportedly sub-par because of the GPU design itself. This might end up being a massive issue for mobile gamers who want a powerful and efficient GPU, something that we've seen inside the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Take this information with a pinch of salt, though, as the chip hasn't even launched yet.

Samsung Exynos Chip 5G VoNR

The Exynos 2400 reportedly features a 10-core CPU. It has one Cortex-X4 CPU core clocked at 3.16GHz, two Cortex-A720 CPU cores clocked at 2.9GHz, three Cortex-A720 CPU cores clocked at 2.6GHz, and four Cortex-A520 CPU cores clocked at 1.95GHz. The chipset also features the Xclipse 940 GPU with six WGPs (Work Group Processor), which is double that of the Xclipse 920 GPU inside the Exynos 2200. If there is no improvement in the architecture or clock speed of these GPU cores, then the GPU performance of the Exynos 2400 could be similar to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and that would be considerably lower than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Then there's the issue of the fabrication process. The Exynos 2400 is said to be manufactured using Samsung Foundry's second-generation 4nm process (4LPP). No one knows for sure whether Samsung Foundry can match the transistor density or power efficiency of TSMC's 4nm (4NP) process that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip uses. Users have been quite happy with the Galaxy S23 series due to its good performance, efficiency, and battery life, but it looks like the fate of the Galaxy S24 series is in the hands of the Exynos 2400.
