Earlier this year, Google promised to improve Wear OS through several new features, apps, and tiles. A few months ago, it started rolling out new tiles for Google Keep, and now, it has released the native Gmail app for all Wear OS smartwatches running Wear OS 4. You can use the Gmail app on any Galaxy Watch that runs Wear OS.
The native Gmail app for Wear OS is now available on the Google Play Store, and it was launched alongside the Pixel Watch 2, which was announced during Google's event last night. This app was announced a few months ago when Google unveiled Wear OS 4 at the Google I/O 2023 event. The app lets you browse all your emails, including your inbox and all other folders/labels. You can view the complete email body but can't see or open attachments such as images or documents.
The app also supports multiple Google accounts; switching between them is pretty straightforward. You can go through all the emails in the same thread and refresh your inbox manually. It even displays the current sync status and has a watch face complication that displays the number of new emails you've received. Mind you, it doesn't show all the unread emails, but only those that have arrived after you last opened the Gmail app.
The Gmail app runs pretty smoothly, even on our two-year-old Galaxy Watch 4. Google had also promised to release a native Wear OS app for Google Calendar, but it isn't live yet, and the company hasn't revealed when it plans to release it. We hope Google releases more native apps for Wear OS smartwatches.
