Exynos 2400 GPU could only be as powerful as Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

After exclusively using a Snapdragon processor for the Galaxy S23 series this year, Samsung is expected to bring back a new Exynos chip for the Galaxy S24 lineup next year. The company's next-generation Galaxy S series phones are rumored to feature the Exynos 2400 processor in some countries. While the chip hasn't been announced yet, a new leak offers a look at the Exynos 2400's GPU performance.

Exynos 2400 GPU is almost as fast as Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

Samsung appears to be testing and fine-tuning the GPU performance of the unannounced Exynos 2400 processor inside the Galaxy S24. An entry of the Exynos 2400 has been found in Basemark's Powerboard 4.0 GPU performance test. The Xclipse 940 GPU inside the Exynos 2400 scored 1,656 points in the cross-platform Sacred Path test. That's 30% better GPU performance than the Exynos 2200's Xclipse 920 GPU using Vulkan APIs. More importantly, it is similar to the performance of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, featuring the Adreno 740 GPU, which scored 1,787 points in the same test.

Since it is the early days of testing and the company has months to optimize its performance and power profile, we expect it to improve by the time the Galaxy S24 launches early next year. Still, going by this early look, we think it might not match the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in terms of GPU performance. Considering that the Exynos 2200 had hardware raytracing for games, even the Exynos 2400 could have raytracing, and the company might have improved upon the raytracing performance over its previous chip.

Possible Exynos 2400 specifications

Samsung's System LSI might announce the Exynos 2400 a few weeks before the launch of the Galaxy S24 series. We expect it to use ARM's new Cortex-X4, Cortex-A720, and Cortex-A520 CPU cores. Previous leaks have pointed toward twice the number of GPU cores (WGP or Workgroup Processors) compared to the Exynos 2200, but their clock speed and architecture are unclear as of now. The chip is rumored to be made using Samsung Foundry's newer-generation 4nm semiconductor fabrication process.

If Samsung is unable to match the performance of the Exynos 2400 to the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, it might disappoint fans once again. Some rumors claimed that the Galaxy S24 Ultra will exclusively use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, while the Exynos 2400 will be used only in the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+, and that might result in a huge performance difference between the base, Plus, and Ultra models of the Galaxy S24.

MediaTek could help Exynos find a crack in Snapdragon’s armor

Exynos has had a rough time in recent years. I don't hate Exynos, and I'm happy with how my Exynos 2400-powered Galaxy S24+ turned out, but I can understand why many Samsung fans might still be reluctant toward the in-house chip brand. As the old adage goes, “Fool me once, shame on you; Fool me […]
