In anticipation of World Mental Health Day, October 10, Samsung announced it has partnered with the Massachusetts General Hospital to conduct a study that should help researchers better understand the relationship between daily routines and mental health.

In a recent blog post, Samsung cited the World Health Organization (WHO), stating that one in every eight people in the world suffers from some form of mental disorder. Unfortunately, mental health conditions are often overlooked, and many issues are ignored entirely.

Samsung has announced it is partnering with the Massachusetts General Hospital (MHG) to conduct new studies that should give researchers better insight into how various mental conditions relate to daily activities. The Galaxy Watch will be the primary tool for collecting data for this study.

Galaxy Watch devices will be used for the study

Galaxy Watch smartwatches that are equipped with the BioActive Sensor offer a great learning opportunity. These devices already offer deeper insight into their users' holistic wellness, and Samsung believes that the Galaxy Watch can help increase awareness around mental health.

The BioActive Sensor was introduced with the Galaxy Watch 4 series and powers the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 6 lineups alike. It combines three powerful health sensors on a single chip, including Optical Heart Rate, Electrical Heart Signal, and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis sensors.

Samsung, in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital psychiatry department expert, will leverage data gathered by the Galaxy Watch for a better understanding of the relationship between sleep, daily routines, physical activity, heart rate, and the user's mental health status.

“Through our work with Massachusetts General Hospital, we aim to empower users with a better understanding of their mental wellbeing more conveniently, and give them a more complete picture of their holistic health, including mind and body,” said Hon Pak, VP and Head of the Digital Health Team, MX Business at Samsung.
