One minor feature Google removed with Android 14 but Samsung didn’t

Every major One UI update brings with it a newer version of Android, which means that not all the features and changes mentioned in the changelogs for One UI updates come from Samsung. Some of them come from Google and apply to the core Android OS for all devices regardless of brand.

However, not all core Android OS features are found on non-Pixel devices, and the same goes for some of the features that Google removes from Android now and then. That's exactly the case with one particular feature that Google has removed with Android 14 but still works on Galaxy smartphones and tablets that have been updated to Android 14.

With Android 8 (Oreo), Google introduced notifications to the long-press menu for app shortcuts, allowing you to see a snippet of the latest notification for an app by long-pressing its shortcut on the home screen or in the app drawer. With Android 14, that is no longer possible on devices running a stock version of the OS, such as Google's Pixel smartphones.

However, Galaxy devices that are running Android 14 still have this feature and will likely continue to have it in the future as well. It's not exactly the most useful feature, and most users probably weren't even aware it was a thing, but still, this is a good example of how Samsung makes up its own mind about some aspects of the user experience.

Android 14 and One UI 6 bring a whole host of new features and improvements to Galaxy devices, and Samsung has been releasing the update to eligible phones and tablets at a breakneck pace and will continue doing so over the coming weeks and into early 2024.
