Google Chrome will now default to desktop site on your Galaxy tablet

To optimize the browsing experience for Android tablets and other big-screen devices, Google Chrome will now default to desktop mode on Samsung Galaxy and other Android tablets. Thanks to this, the mobile website won't open on your Android tablet and will also eliminate the huge percentage of blank space on the screen.

Google notes that “mobile websites designed for small screens and low RAM don’t always take advantage of the large screen and other powerful device capabilities.” Now that Android devices, including tablets, are more powerful than ever, defaulting to desktop mode is the best option to provide the best possible Google Chrome browsing experience on premium Android devices.

Google Chrome will use a desktop User-Agent with a “viewport that matches the window width and not use a default virtual viewport size of 980px.” Apart from this, Google is also making some changes where the “the SEC-CH-UA-MODEL and SEC-CH-UA-PLATFORM HTTP headers will no longer report “Pixel Tablet” and “Android”, and instead will report “” and “Linux” respectively.”

For the Google Chrome browser, Google defines premium tablets as devices with at least 8GB of RAM and a 10-inch or bigger display. Samsung Galaxy tablets and other Android premium tablets will still have the option to toggle Desktop mode on or off, which will be available on the overflow menu as well as inside the Settings > Site settings > Desktop site. Here, users also have the option to add exceptions.
