Ever since the PlayStation 5 was launched in 2020, it became evident that this console was going to be a colossal hit. The PS5 has continued to set new sales records for the Japanese company with Sony now announcing a new sales milestone for its console.
The company has announced that PlayStation 5 sales have hit 50 million units since launch. Sony continues to see sustained high demand for the console even after almost three years have passed since it first came out.
PlayStation 5 is hitting major sales milestones
It's pertinent to note here that the figure Sony has announced represents 50 million units sold to customers. These aren't shipped units that may be on a retailer's shelf or inside a warehouse. These are 50 million units that are out there in the hands of customers.
Back in July, Sony had announced that PlayStation 5 sales had hit 40 million units. The latest update shows that the company has managed to sell an additional 10 million units from July 2023 to December 2023 alone.
Supply chain issues had remained a big challenge for Sony to solve as constraints made it difficult for enough customers to get their hands on the console. It also gave rise to a highly unfair scalper's market where consoles were being sold for outrageous premiums over the official price.
Availability has since improved significantly and it's much easier to buy the PS5 at its actual price even through online platforms like Amazon. Sony now looks to further increasing sales of the PlayStation 5 well into the new year, aided by the launch of the new slimmer PlayStation 5.
