Netflix introduced games on its platform in 2021. Currently, the section has 86 titles and 90 more are in development. If you have a membership of the streaming service, you can play these games for free. Plus, games on Netflix don’t contain advertisements or in-game purchases. Unfortunately, that’s going to change soon.
A new report from the Wall Street Journal claims that executives at Netflix have internally discussed generating revenue from games. As a part of that, they’ve considered introducing advertisements and in-app purchases in games on the platform, as well as charging money for more sophisticated titles.
When Netflix introduced games on its platform, it boasted that the titles are free to play and neither contain ads nor in-app purchases. “All you need is a Netflix subscription — there’s no ads, no additional fees and no in-app purchases. (Don’t let the demogorgon tell you otherwise),” the company said in a press release.
Netflix has been offering games for free while not selling ads or in-app purchases to attract people to this section of entertainment on the platform. However, Netflix will have to make revenue out of games to get a return on the investment. So, sooner or later, you will have to watch ads or pay to play games on Netflix.
