Samsung responds to Apple’s True Tone with new Galaxy S24 display feature

Samsung is constantly improving the displays and image quality on its consumer electronics, from TVs to mobile devices, and the latest Galaxy S24 flagships have some new tricks up their sleeve. The Galaxy S24 displays are not just faster and significantly brighter than the previous models. They also take advantage of at least one new software feature that is meant to improve the user experience.

The One UI 6.1 update for the next-gen flagships brings something new to the table — an extra display option that isn't available on previous versions of One UI.

It's called Adaptive Color Tone, and you could consider it an upgraded version of the existing Eye Comfort Shield feature. Or you could call it Samsung's alternative to Apple's True Tone, available on iPhones and MacBooks.

What is Adaptive Color Tone for the Galaxy S24?

Unlike Eye Comfort Shield, which offers one warm filter that activates depending on the time of day, Adaptive Color Tone uses the front and rear-facing cameras on the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra to adjust colors and white balance based on ambient lighting conditions.

The goal is to make the image on the Dynamic AMOLED 2X display look more natural in different environments. At night and in lower lighting conditions, the screen might adjust to have a warmer tone. Conversely, the Galaxy S24 display can look cooler during the day or in direct sunlight.

Adaptive Color Tone works seamlessly, but it's just one display feature that contributes to improving the user experience. Samsung's Galaxy S24 displays across the series are also stunningly brighter and can reach 2,600 nits. Combined with an improved Vision Booster technology that adjusts the screen even better than last year, these upgraded Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra displays look excellent.

Whether Samsung will make this new Adaptive Color Tone option available to older Galaxy phones through the One UI 6.1 update remains to be seen. For now, it's a Galaxy S24 series exclusive.

You can pre-order the Galaxy S24 ahead of Samsung's official January 31 release on store shelves. In many markets, pre-order customers can benefit from free storage upgrades. Hit the “pre-order” button below for more details.
