Nintendo Switch is on the path to become highest-selling console of all time

In May 2023, Nintendo reported that it sold 125.62 million units of the Switch (including Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite) till March 2023, and the company predicted that it would sell 15 million units of the three gaming consoles from April 2023 to March 2024. Now, in a new earnings report, Nintendo forecasts that the sales of those gaming consoles from April 2023 to March 2024 will stand at 15.5 million units instead of 15 million units. That means, by the end of March 2024, Nintendo will manage to sell around 141.12 million units of the Switch.

Currently, the Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) is the highest-selling gaming console of all time with global lifetime sales of 155 million units. In the second position is the Nintendo DS with global lifetime sales of 154 million units. Going by the numbers shared by Nintendo, it looks like the global lifetime sales of the Switch could beat that of the Nintendo DS and the Sony PS2 by 2025 and it would become the highest-selling gaming console of all time by then.

Of course, a lot could change between now and then, including Nintendo discontinuing the Switch with the launch of the Switch 2, but considering the present scenario, there’s a real possibility that the Switch could create a new record. Speaking of Switch 2, experts predict the console to arrive by the end of this year. Leaks and rumors suggest that it will have an 8-inch LCD and a Nvidia T239 chipset, which will be more powerful than the one in the Switch but will lack special hardware to support DLSS. Reports also suggest that the prices of the Switch 2 and its games will be higher than those of the Switch and its games.
