At MWC 2024, Qualcomm’s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Don McGuire, announced that the company will unveil the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit in October 2024. Along with that, he also revealed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will feature the company’s custom CPU core, called Orion, which is also used in the Snapdragon X Elite chipset for Windows PCs that was announced in October 2023.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will arrive as the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and when launched, it will be Qualcomm’s new flagship chipset for mobile devices. Expect upcoming flagship smartphones from most brands to feature this SoC. Speaking of which, if Samsung plans on offering Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in the Galaxy S25 series, the Korean tech giant will most likely get the ‘For Galaxy’ version of the chipset made by Qualcomm, which will have higher clock frequency for CPU cores for better performance.
Rumors suggest that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will use TSMC’s second-generation 3nm fabrication process, which should offer higher performance and efficiency compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which uses TSMC’s first-generation 3nm fabrication process. Apart from that, rumors suggest that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will use two prime cores and six high-performance cores, and that’s about it. It will not have any efficiency cores, similar to Dimensity 9300. It’d be interesting to see how that will turn out.
