Samsung’s flagship phones are recording higher global sales

Market research shows that Samsung's phone sales in 2024 have declined month-on-month and year-on-year, but despite this loss, the company's flagship phones are doing better and showing signs of rebounding.

According to new data from Hana Securities (via @Tech_Reve), Samsung sold 1% fewer phones in January 2024 compared to January 2023 and 11% fewer phones compared to December 2023.

However, this includes phones across the entire price spectrum. In reality, it looks like Samsung sold fewer low-cost and mid-range phones but managed to increase flagship phone sales worldwide.

Over the course of 2023, Samsung reportedly sold 31.11 million Galaxy S23 units, outperforming the Galaxy S22, which recorded 24.99 million sales in 2022, by a whopping 24%.

The report states that, in 2023, Samsung sold 11.08 million base Galaxy S23 models, 5.68 million Galaxy S23+ units, and 14.34 million Galaxy S23 Ultras.

The Galaxy S24 series also broke pre-order records in many countries, including Korea, where Samsung confirmed that the lineup recorded 1.21 million pre-orders in just one week. In contrast, when the Galaxy S23 series launched in early 2023, it gained 1.09 million pre-orders in Korea over a similar one-week period.

What about Samsung foldables?

As far as foldable phones go, the report suggests that, over the last six months, Samsung sold 6.83 million Galaxy Z5 units.

Once again, the foldable flip phone form factor proved more successful. Samsung supposedly sold 4.33 million Galaxy Z Flip 5 units and 2.49 million Galaxy Z Fold 5s.

Foldable phone sales have increased year-on-year, but only marginally, from 6.81 to 6.83 million. A year ago, when the Galaxy Z4 series was six months old, Samsung recorded 4.20 million Flip 4 and 2.60 million Z Fold 4 sales.

All in all, both slab-type and foldable Galaxy high-end phones seem to be doing better despite Samsung's overall smartphone sales decreasing globally. Flagship phones are gaining traction, and they might rebound even further this year thanks to additions such as Galaxy AI.

This summer, Samsung is expected to announce a new Galaxy Z6 foldable phone series, which might consist of three models instead of two. Rumors suggest the company might release an Ultra-labeled Galaxy Z Fold 6 alongside a standard version.
