Meta Platforms, formerly known as Facebook Inc., released its digital wallet “Novi” in mid-October, and today, the company announced that Novi is coming to WhatsApp for a pilot run. A limited number of WhatsApp users in the United States can now send and receive money to and from family and friends through the messaging platform, and the process couldn't be easier.
The Novi digital wallet uses USDP (Pax Dollar), which is a digital currency that runs on secure blockchain technology. Novi exists as a dedicated app, but now it's also seamlessly integrated into WhatsApp. At least for a number of select users in the USA.
Meta Platforms should bring Novi money transfers to more WhatsApp users stateside — and possibly other markets, including Guatemala — after the test run concludes, though as yet, there's no concrete information regarding widespread release plans. Until then, here's how it works.
Sending and receiving money is as easy as “Hi”
Sending and receiving money through Novi using WhatsApp is as easy as pie. Or as easy as saying “hi,” since the process is done through the chat window.
Users only have to tap the attachment icon and select the “Payment” option. They can then specify the amount of USDP they wish to send to the respective contact via Novi, tap “Next,” and confirm by pressing the “Send Money” button. The completed transfer will then show up in the WhatsApp conversation like any other message or attachment.
The Novi test run appears to be open to both the iOS and Android platforms, so there's a high probability that some people who now have access to this new feature in the USA are using a Samsung Galaxy smartphone.
