Competition between Samsung’s camera suppliers just got a whole lot more intense

Samsung's camera sensor business, whilst not as impressive as Sony's, is one of the best there is on the market. Samsung has even ramped up production due to increased demand. A new development in the market (via The Elec) will now let Samsung churn out even more smartphones with high-end camera sensors.

Powerlogics, a supplier to Samsung, now plans to break into the highly sought-after OIS (optical image stabilization) market. The company is in the process of prepping its infrastructure to mass-produce OIS actuators. Full-blown production is expected to commence in early 2022. It will allow Samsung (and others) to order OIS-enables camera sensors en-masse.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics, which also happens to manufacture OIS-ready image sensors, will now face new competition along with Mcnex and Patron. Competing firms such as Coasia and Namuga are expected to enter the playing field in the not-too-distant future as well. Hence, we can expect to see a lot more smartphones with OIS support in 2022-23.

The report adds that Samsung wants to acquire 20% more camera sensors for 2022 to keep up with its aim of selling 334 million smartphones. As a result, we can expect to see OIS a whole lot more devices, such as the entire Galaxy A series. OIS is a niche feature usually exclusive to top-of-the-line offerings. Including it in mid-rangers will give Samsung the much-needed leg up it requires to reclaim its crown from Xiaomi.
