One of Samsung’s craziest ideas for a phone has a dual rollable display

From the realm of “anything's possible but highly improbable” comes a new Samsung design that depicts an ambitious concept for a dual-sided/two-edged Galaxy Z rollable phone. It looks like nothing Samsung has ever done before, which probably means it will never launch as a commercial product. But if you're curious to see what bonkers ideas come out of Samsung's R&D labs sometimes, well, look no further than the image gallery below.

The sketches below were pulled from a WIPO application (via LetsGoDigital) that Samsung had filed in May. They depict a weird smartphone equipped with two slide-out displays. Or rather, one rollable display that extends out on two sides. The phone can roll the display out at the top, the right edge, or both simultaneously. In Samsung's vision, users would be able to control the rollable display through pinch and zoom gestures.

When the screen is rolled out on both sides, the phone forms the shape of a Galaxy S22 Ultra camera housing in unofficial pre-release renders. Or the shape of an L, P, Tetris block, or however else you may want to describe it.

Ideas just keep on rolling

Needless to say, this unusual form factor discovered at WIPO hasn't been mentioned by Samsung at its event earlier this year, most likely because it's not very close to becoming a reality. Samsung plans to use flexible display technology for more form factors, including rollable and slideable tablets, but a candy bar-shaped phone that turns into an “L” is probably not a high priority right now.

The dual rollable Galaxy Z Fold is an interesting concept that was cooked up on a contextual level by Samsung engineers at some point in time, and the gallery below exemplifies some use cases. But a WIPO application doesn't guarantee a product's development, let alone a full-fledged market launch. Keep that in mind before you get any ideas that we might be looking at the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
