Samsung may have initially planned to bring the Galaxy S21 FE to the market in the third quarter of 2021, but for reasons that aren't very clear — though likely related to production issues and semiconductor shortages — the phone got pushed back to January 2022. Well, it's the first week of January, and thankfully, the time of truth is finally here after countless leaks and rumors.
Samsung officially introduced the Galaxy S21 FE to the world today as the direct sequel to the Galaxy S20 FE, and a complement to the existing Galaxy S21 lineup.
According to Samsung, the philosophy that drove the development of the Galaxy S21 FE forward was to “give Galaxy consumers more, for less.” That should be the purpose of any Fan Edition device, and the Galaxy S21 FE appears to be taking it to heart.
The Galaxy S21 FE is everything you expected it to be
The Galaxy S21 FE looks nearly identical to the base Galaxy S21 model, except it has a color-matched camera housing and metal frame. The display is flat, and the bezels are thin. The phone has a slim 7.9mm profile, stereo speakers, and an in-display fingerprint scanner.
In most regions, including Europe, the Galaxy S21 FE will ship with the Snapdragon 888 chipset, while in select Asian markets, customers will get the variant equipped with the Exynos 2100 SoC. This is a pretty big deal for customers that have always wanted to use Qualcomm chipsets in Exynos markets.
Memory options include 6/8GB of RAM and 128/256GB of non-expandable storage. The retail box is eco-friendly, meaning it uses biodegradable materials and contains as few accessories as possible. The phone is accompanied by a USB-C charging cable, a SIM card key, and the usual documentation.
The back of the phone accommodates a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 12MP wide sensor, and an 8MP telephoto shooter, the latter of which boasts 3x optical zoom. On the opposite side of the phone, the selfie camera resides in the Infinity-O display cutout and has a resolution of 32MP.
Samsung has enhanced the Camera app with features such as Nigh Mode, Zoom Lock, AI Face Restoration, Dual Recording Mode, and Object Eraser. The Galaxy S21 FE ships with Android 12 and One UI 4.
The Galaxy S21 FE is powered by a 4,500mAh battery with 25W fast-charging capabilities — wall charger sold separately. Samsung will release the device next week in four color options: white, lavender, graphite, and olive, though the availability of the latter two colors appears to vary by market.
