Galaxy S22 Ultra could get an awkward downgrade

The overwhelming consensus about the Galaxy S22 series' memory/storage configuration has been that the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ will be max out at 8GB of RAM while the Galaxy S22 Ultra is expected to start at 12GB. The latter statement is true, but only partially, if some new Geekbench listings and prolific leaker Ice Universe are to be believed.

It seems that the base Galaxy S22 Ultra variant will have just 8GB of RAM. However, better-specced variants could up that to 12GB and 16GB. The latter could be paired with 1TB of storage, something we reported exclusively a few days ago. The extra storage would be welcome, especially due to the lack of a micro SD card slot.

We stumbled upon both the Exynos 2200 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 variants of the Galaxy S22 Ultra on Geekbench, bearing model numbers SM-S908B and SM-S908U, respectively. The former is a carrier-locked variant intended for the US and the latter is the international variant. We also get a glimpse at the Exynos 2200's lacklustre performance compared to Qualcomm's offering.

The Exynos 2200 toting Galaxy S22 Ultra nets a measly single-core score of 1,014; significantly lesser than the Snapdragon  Gen 1's 1,226. Things are better off on the multi-core front, with the former scoring 3,415 and the latter 3,462. Both variants are running Android 12 out of the box and feature 8GB of RAM.

A Galaxy S22 Ultra with 8GB of RAM could disappoint fans and enthusiasts, mainly because the last-generation Galaxy S21 Ultra had 12GB of RAM across all variants. While 4GB fewer RAM will not affect its day-to-day performance, it will still be perceived as Samsung cheaping out on its magnum opus.
