Galaxy S22 series haptic feedback to improve thanks to new X-axis motor

Samsung has reportedly borrowed another upgrade from the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to improve the upcoming Galaxy S22 lineup. Specifically, a new rumor claims that all three Galaxy S22 models feature an X-axis linear motor for detailed haptic feedback.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 was the first Samsung phone to ship with this upgrade. In theory, an X-axis linear motor can generate shorter and crisper vibrations. Because touchscreens don't provide any meaningful tactile feedback on their own, haptic feedback motors are used in conjunction with software to recreate the illusion of physical feedback from the device when touching on-screen buttons, dragging sliders, etc.

The Galaxy S22 series' haptic feedback could improve in time

Generally speaking, the quality of the feedback motor — as well as the software implementation — determines how a phone reacts to user interactions. Improvements can sometimes be added through software, as Samsung did with One UI 4.0. Other times, the hardware itself limits the quality of haptic feedback, and if rumors are true, Samsung wants to address haptic hardware limitations with the launch of the Galaxy S22 series.

It all sounds very promising, but we should probably manage our expectations. If we take the Galaxy Z Fold 3 as an example of what's to come, we haven't noticed a massive improvement in haptic feedback, even though the foldable flagship rocks a new X-axis linear motor. So, it remains to be seen just how good the Galaxy S22 series will be in this regard. The hardware may be top-notch, but the software implementation is equally important. Either way, upgrading the motor allows for improvements through firmware later down the line, so it's a big step in the right direction for the Galaxy S flagship series.
