Samsung introduced several improvements to camera quality and software with the Galaxy S22 series. One such software improvement is the ability to remove unwanted shadows and reflections from images using the built-in Gallery app. Now, those features have been released to other Galaxy smartphones as well.
The South Korean firm has started rolling out an update to the Photo Editor app, and it is available on various Galaxy smartphones, including Galaxy Z Fold, Galaxy Z Flip, Galaxy S, and Galaxy Note series smartphones running Android 12-based One UI 4.0. Some mid-range smartphones have received the update as well.
To use the feature, you have to update the Photo Editor app from the Galaxy Store and download Object Eraser, Reflection Eraser, and Shadow Eraser plugins. If you have these plugins already, you may have to update them to the latest version.
Here's how you can activate these plugins from the Samsung Gallery app.
- Step 1: Open the image that you want to edit using Samsung Gallery.
- Step 2: Click the three-dot menu.
- Step 3: Tap on Labs. Now, turn on the toggles for Share Eraser and Reflection Eraser.
- Step 4: Hit the back button and click on Object Eraser.
- Step 5: Draw around shadows or reflections that you want to remove from the image, and then click on the Erase Shadows or the Erase Reflections button.
Right now, these features are a part of Samsung Labs, which means they are in the beta phase of development, so there can be a few issues. Results can be hit or miss depending on the image and the device (due to the processing power of the built-in NPU). In our testing, the result was fairly decent on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Expect improvements with future updates.
