The creators of TikTok, the social media app that took the mobile world by storm in recent years, appear to be working on another mobile app almost nobody seems to know about. It's called Whee, and it is listed on Google Play already.
The app is unavailable in most markets, if any, as the download ticker on the Play Store shows “0+” as of this writing.
However, X user @ArtemR who first brought the app to our attention claims that Whee is live in over a dozen countries. TikTok's Whee APKs also appears to be available for download through third-party websites.
Another app to keep your eyes glued to your phone?
Developer TikTok Pte. Ltd. describes Whee as a new social app that can keep users connected with their close friends “through life's spontaneous moments.” The official description says users can capture and share photos “that only your friends can see.” The screenshots below give us a glimpse of the Whee app's UI.
Although TikTok Pte. Ltd. is known across the mobile world for one app — TikTok — its parent company, ByteDance, has a few other apps under its belt. Albeit, neither reaches the popularity levels of TikTok.
There's no official information as to when or if TikTok's Whee will be available worldwide, and there's little to go by on how exactly the platform works or how it might compete with similar social media platforms.
In a short message on X, @ArtemR says the app looks more similar to Instagram than Snapchat.
TikTok gained a lot of popularity by delivering a constant flow of random short-format content to its users. It's unclear if Whee will attempt to employ similar tactics, but the “keep you connected […] through life's spontaneous moments” bit in the Google Play description indicates it might.
