“Awesome” is the word that Samsung's marketing department has drilled in our brains for the Galaxy A series. The Galaxy A5x lineup in particular has a legacy of awesomeness. They've remained some of Samsung's best-selling smartphones across the globe.
So this year's contender has big shoes to fill. Samsung officially unveiled the Galaxy A53 5G today. This is definitely one of the company's most important device launches of the year. On paper, it does appear to be a worthy successor to the Galaxy A52.
Galaxy A53 5G gets a big performance bump
The design isn't all that different from its predecessor, then again, Samsung didn't really need to fix something that wasn't broken. The front is dominated by the Galaxy A53 5G's 6.5-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with a 120Hz refresh rate.
It measures 74.8 x 159.6 x 8.1mm and weighs 189g. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. An IP67 rating provides water and dust resistance. Under the hood, you'll find Samsung's new Exynos 1280 processor with 6/8GB RAM and 128/256GB storage. A microSD card slot is present on the device. A 3.5mm headphone jack is missing, though.
Compared to the Galaxy A52 5G, the device's 5nm Exynos 1280 chipset delivers an 18% bump in multi-core CPU and a whopping 43% bump in GPU performance. These are ideal figures for mobile gaming enthusiasts.
The camera setup has been improved with a 12-megapixel ultrawide, 64-megapixel wide-angle sensor with OIS, 5-megapixel depth and 5-megapixel macro sensors. A 32-megapixel camera is present on the front for selfie duties. Samsung has made improvements to the AI-powered camera software to improve low light photography.
The improved Night mode now synthesizes up to 12 images at once for brighter night photos with less noise. For videos, the device's framerate is automatically adjusted to enhance videos shot in low-light environments.
Powering the device is a 5,000mAh battery that has support for 25W fast charging. Do keep in mind that the GalaxyA 53 5G doesn't come with a charger in the box, so you'll have to buy one yourself.
One UI 4.1 and Android 12 come pre-installed. Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy A53 5G will receive four years of Android OS upgrades as well as five years of security updates.
The Galaxy A53 5G will be available in select markets starting April 1. Color options include Awesome Black, Awesome White, Awesome Blue and Awesome Peach. Prices start at £399.
