Samsung killing the Galaxy Watch bezel ring would be so bad

I’m sure you’ve heard it by now: According to our very own sources, Samsung could be launching a Pro version in its new Galaxy Watch lineup this year. Whether or not this means the Classic model is going away is unclear at this time, but I sure do hope Samsung isn’t going to be killing off the physical bezel ring that has become synonymous with its smartwatches.

I’m sure many others have had the same thought, and rightly so. That mechanical rotating bezel has been an important part of Samsung’s smartwatches ever since the company started making round smartwatches, and I say that as someone who doesn’t even like watches that much (my Galaxy Watch 4 spends a lot of time sitting on my desk instead of my wrist; I stay active and can workout without the need of a fitness tracker just fine, and I have my phone for seeing the time anyway).

And it’s not just that the rotating bezel looks good: It’s also an intuitive method of controlling and navigating through the user interface. Sure, the touchscreen works fine, even on screens as small as the ones on smartwatches, but having the ring to swipe through menus just feels so natural, especially if you’ve worn traditional mechanical watches and played around with its bezel ring.

It’s certainly one of the most intuitive inventions we’ve seen in Samsung’s history of making electronic products, and seeing it disappear from the Galaxy Watch line would be disappointing, especially as its virtual alternative just doesn’t feel that great. And yes, I know there’s no guarantees yet that that’s what Samsung is planning to do (the Pro variant could just be a name change), but if it is, I really, really hope the company changes its mind.

What about you? Would you be okay with Samsung removing the physical bezel ring from its smartwatches?
